Demilitarized Zone, North Korea

WELCOME TO THE DEMILTARIZED ZONE IN KOREA!!!
What is the Demilitarized Zone?
The Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea is a strip of land that acts as a ‘buffer’ zone, a neutral zone between two rival powers that is created in order to diminish the danger of conflict.  It crosses over the 38th parallel, spanning about 151 miles (248 kilometres), and is two and a half miles (4 kilometres) wide. The Demilitarized Zone is also said to be a symbol of their ideological differences (North Korea believed in Communism while South Korea believed in Democracy)

Why do people go there?
The Demilitarized Zone is one of the last few relics of the Cold War which lasted from 1947-1991. Furthermore, the areas surrounding the Demilitarized Zone is inaccessible to the general public. Hence, they have become a wildlife preserve containing incredible bio-diversity. Hence, a special tour course has been designed to help tourists travel to destinations of historical interest and outstanding natural beauty, another reason why the Demilitarized Zone in Korea is a hot spot.
The Demilitarised Zone also holds many popular tourist spots such as...
  • the Panmunjeom (most notably known for the peace talks held there on October 25, 1951 and was designated as the Joint Security Area on July 27, 1953 when the armistice agreement was signed)
  • Imjingak (built in 1972 with the hope that someday unification would be possible and to built to console those from both sides who are unable to return to their hometowns, friends and families because of the division of Korea. Famous because it is possible to visit without going through any security check points)
  • Odusan Unification Observatory (where foreigners like to visit and experience the stark reality of the divided Peninsula)
  • the 3rd infiltration tunnel to South Korea
And MANY more.
